Set Your Heart on Fire Again...

Pentecost is not just a story about what happened long ago in an upper room in Jerusalem. It is about what is happening right now within us. The same Holy Spirit that descended upon the Apostles like tongues of fire has been poured into our hearts through Baptism and strengthened in us through Confirmation. We are not empty people trying to survive life alone. We are temples of the Holy Spirit. The fire of God lives within us.

And yet, many Catholics live as though that fire has gone out.

We come to Mass, we say our prayers, we carry burdens silently, but deep inside there can still be fear, anger, loneliness, addiction, resentment, or hopelessness. We believe in Jesus, but we often live disconnected from His Spirit. Pentecost calls us to wake up. The Spirit of God is not meant to remain buried under routine or distraction. The Holy Spirit is alive, moving, speaking, healing, and calling us into something greater.

Before Pentecost, the Apostles were hiding behind locked doors. They were afraid. Confused. Uncertain about the future. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them, everything changed. Fear became courage. Weakness became strength. Silence became proclamation. Those ordinary men went out into the world transformed because they finally allowed the Spirit of God to move through them.

That same transformation is possible for us.

The tragedy is not that God has stopped speaking. The tragedy is that we have stopped listening.

The Holy Spirit whispers in the quiet moments of our lives. He nudges us to forgive when we want revenge. He calls us to pray when we would rather scroll endlessly through distractions. He asks us to trust when anxiety takes hold. He pushes us to love when bitterness feels easier. But too often we resist. We cling to control. We hold onto sin. We keep Jesus at a safe distance because true surrender can be frightening.

But the will of Jesus is not meant to imprison us. It is meant to set us free.

When we truly connect ourselves to the Holy Spirit through prayer, the sacraments, Scripture, and silence, something begins to change within us. Our hearts soften. Our eyes open. We begin to see people differently. We become less concerned with ourselves and more concerned with the suffering around us. We stop asking, “What do I want?” and begin asking, “Lord, what do You want of me?”

That is where real life begins.

The world does not need more Catholics who simply identify with the Church. The world needs Catholics who are on fire with the presence of God. Catholics whose lives look different because they have encountered Jesus deeply. Catholics who forgive radically, love boldly, serve humbly, and trust completely.

This Pentecost, do not settle for a lukewarm faith. Open your heart fully to the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to break what is hardened, heal what is wounded, and awaken what has fallen asleep within you. The Spirit is ready to move. The question is whether we are willing to let Him.

Blessings,

Deacon Mike
